Overview
What water filter system installation covers, and why it matters.
What it is
Water filter system installation covers under-sink drinking water filters, whole-house cartridge systems, carbon taste-and-odour filters, sediment pre-filters, and scale-reduction units. We tee into the cold mains correctly, fit isolators, mount the housings accessibly, and commission the system end-to-end.
Who it's for
Homeowners, landlords and small commercial sites across Leicestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands who want better-tasting drinking water, less limescale on appliances, or cleaner water throughout the house.
When you need it
Anytime, but most customers call after a kettle furs up faster than expected, after a new kitchen fit, or when moving into a hard-water area. Best installed alongside any kitchen plumbing work to minimise disruption.
Why professional matters
A correctly installed system uses WRAS-approved fittings, dedicated isolators, and a properly sized filter for your flow rate. Done wrong, filters restrict mains pressure, cartridges leak at the housing, and the system contaminates rather than cleans. We size, fit and commission properly.
What happens if you ignore it
The cost of waiting.
Leicestershire and the wider Midlands sit firmly in a hard-water belt. Limescale eats kettles, shortens boiler life, and dulls taps and showers. A poorly chosen or badly fitted filter solves none of it, and often introduces new leaks.
Risks if left unrepaired
- Cheap inline filters fitted without isolators mean draining the whole mains every cartridge change.
- Undersized housings restrict flow, drop pressure at every tap on the run.
- Filters fitted without a pressure-reducing valve can rupture under mains spikes.
- Missed cartridge changes turn the filter into a bacterial reservoir, worse than no filter at all.
- DIY tee joints on the cold mains are the single most common slow-leak we are called back to repair.
Common DIY mistakes we see
- Using a drinking water cartridge on a whole-house line, wrong micron, wrong flow rate.
- Mounting the housing where the cartridge can't physically be unscrewed for changes.
- Skipping the bypass loop, every cartridge change shuts the house off the mains.
- Forgetting the flush cycle on new carbon cartridges, black water in the glass for days.
- Teeing in upstream of the boiler feed without isolating the heating system properly.
Our process
A five-step system, every job, every time.
-
1
Site Survey
We test your mains pressure and flow rate, identify the best tee point on the cold mains, and recommend the right filter type (under-sink, whole-house, or scale-reduction) for your water and household size.
-
2
Isolate & Tee
Mains isolated at the stopcock, drained back, and a clean tee fitted with full-bore quarter-turn isolators either side of the filter housing so future cartridge changes take minutes, not hours.
-
3
Mount & Plumb
Housing mounted with access clearance for the cartridge spanner, supply and outlet plumbed in copper or push-fit to match the existing run, and a bypass loop fitted where the system warrants it.
-
4
Flush & Pressure Test
New cartridges flushed per manufacturer spec until the water runs clear, system pressure-tested at the highest tap downstream, and every joint inspected dry.
-
5
Handover & Guarantee
We label the isolators, leave you the cartridge spec and change schedule, demo the bypass, and hand over a written 12-month workmanship guarantee.

In detail
The technical detail behind a proper water filter system installation.
Choosing and installing the right water filter is part plumbing, part water chemistry. Here's what a proper install actually involves.
Filter type for the job
Under-sink drinking water filters serve a single dedicated tap, low flow, fine micron, carbon block. Whole-house systems sit just after the internal stopcock and treat every outlet, higher flow, larger housing, often a sediment pre-filter plus a carbon stage. Scale-reduction systems use polyphosphate or template-assisted crystallisation media to stop limescale forming downstream.
Tee point and isolation
We tee in downstream of the internal stopcock and any pressure-reducing valve, with a full-bore isolator before and after the filter housing. A bypass loop with a third isolator lets you keep water flowing during a cartridge change, essential for whole-house systems serving boilers and showers.
Pressure and flow
We measure incoming mains pressure (usually 2–4 bar in the Midlands) and dynamic flow rate before specifying the housing. Undersized housings choke the supply, oversized ones waste cartridge life. Whole-house systems on a 22mm main need a 1" housing minimum.
Cartridge selection and change schedule
Sediment cartridges are typically 5 micron, carbon blocks 1 micron for drinking, 5–10 micron for whole-house. Change schedules range from 6 months (heavy use, fine micron) to 12 months (whole-house carbon). We leave you the exact spec and a calendar reminder.
Mounting and serviceability
The housing is mounted with enough clearance below for the cartridge spanner to swing, and the supply routed so the housing can be opened without disturbing the surrounding pipework. The single most common fault we are called to is a housing fitted where the cartridge cannot physically be removed.
Flush, commission and document
New carbon cartridges are flushed until clear (typically 5–10 minutes), the system is pressure-tested under live mains at the highest downstream tap, and we leave you with isolator labels, a written cartridge schedule and the 12-month guarantee certificate.
